Custom Bomb Act I - is the first sculptural series by French artist Gabrielle Dromain, exploring transformation, identity and our relationship with the cultural symbols that surround us.

Starting with discarded spray cans, Gabrielle cuts, opens and reconstructs each object by hand, transforming an instrument of creation into artwork itself. Within these fractured industrial forms, familiar figures and fragments of popular culture are displaces from their original worlds and given a new context.

Raw metal, spontaneous paint, light and found objects collide to create a collection in which destruction becomes part of the creative process.

Each Custom Bomb is a unique, signed and numbered sculpture - an individual fragment of a larger exploration of what we recognise, what we transform and makes us belong.

ACT I marks the beginning.

““I am fascinated by the tension between belonging and becoming ourselves. My work asks whether we can carry the symbols that connect us to others without disappearing inside them.””
— Gabrielle Dromain

Who I am

I am Gabrielle Dromain, a French artist exploring identity, belonging and the quiet struggle between who we are and who we are expected to be.

My relationship with making began with my father. He taught me to look beyond the original purpose of an object—to touch, dismantle, transform and imagine what else it could become. That instinct has never left me.

Today, I work with sculpture and object reappropriation to explore a question that has followed me throughout my life:

Can we truly belong without losing what makes us unique?

My work uses familiar objects and recognisable symbols as a common language. I am less interested in popular culture itself than in our extraordinary ability to recognise its codes—and in the sense of community those references can instantly create between us.

Custom Bomb is my first exploration of this tension. The spray can becomes a shell, almost a womb, from which another identity struggles to emerge. The drips are deliberately imperfect: tears, scars and traces of the effort required to break through what contains us.

My work is also deeply connected to transmission—from what my father gave me, to what I hope to pass forward.

Ultimately, I create around one question:

How do we find the courage to become ourselves while still finding our place among others?
